The Pittsburgh Public Press is committed to fostering an informed and engaged citizenry through targeted educational initiatives. Our programs are designed to empower individuals and communities with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate complex local issues and advocate for positive change.
Civic Literacy Workshops
Empowering residents with the knowledge and tools to understand local government processes, public policy, and their rights. Our goal is to increase informed participation in community decision-making.
Community Outcome:
Increased voter turnout, more effective community advocacy, and greater transparency from local institutions.
Youth Journalism Initiative
Mentoring high school students in underserved communities to develop critical thinking, research, and reporting skills. We aim to foster the next generation of ethical journalists and engaged citizens.
Community Outcome:
Development of media literacy, pathways to higher education in journalism, and amplification of youth voices in local discourse.
Community Data Storytelling
Training community leaders and non-profits on how to access, analyze, and present local data to tell compelling stories that drive change. Focus areas include public health, housing, and economic development.

Enhanced capacity for data-driven advocacy, improved resource allocation, and a more evidence-based public dialogue on key issues.
Investigative Reporting for All
Offering free workshops and resources for aspiring and citizen journalists to conduct ethical and impactful investigative reporting on local issues. Bridging the gap in local news coverage.

Uncovering unreported community issues, holding local power structures accountable, and fostering a more robust local media ecosystem.
